YOUR NEWBORN GUIDE.
First off — congratulations. This season of life is raw, beautiful, and so worth remembering. I’m truly honoured you’ve invited me into your home to capture it.
My newborn sessions are simple and slow — no bright lights or stiff posing — just your baby, your family, and the quiet kind of magic that lives in the in-between moments. Here’s everything you need to know to get ready, in seven easy steps.
1. Best Time for Photos? Sooner Than Later.
I usually recommend scheduling your newborn session for when your baby is 5–14 days old. Around this time, they’re still teeny, sleepy, and super snuggly — perfect for those calm, cozy photos.
That said, don’t stress if your baby is a bit older. I’m not here for a checklist of poses — I’m here to document your life as it is. We’ll roll with it, no matter what.
2. Sleepy Baby = Happy Session
If you can, try to keep baby awake for an hour or so before I arrive — a little play, some fresh air, or a warm bath can help. Then give them a nice full feed just before the session. A full belly = a happy, sleepy baby who’s ready to snuggle.
Also:
Dress them in a loose, easy-to-remove outfit (like a zip-up onesie).
Skip tight socks or hats beforehand to avoid marks on the skin.
Have a dummy handy, even if they don’t always use one. It can be a total game changer for soothing in-between shots.
3. No Need to Tidy the Whole House
We’ll mostly stick to a few naturally lit spots — usually the bedroom, nursery, or living room.
You don’t need a Pinterest-perfect home. Just a cleared-off bedside table or a made bed is more than enough.
If possible:
Pick spots near windows with soft, natural light
Open curtains/blinds before I arrive
Warm up the room to about 24–26°C if baby will be swaddled or undressed
Got a handmade blanket, a special book, or a sweet little bonnet? Set it aside — I’d love to include it.
4. What to Wear (For You + Your People)
When it comes to clothes, think soft, simple, and neutral. Earthy tones like cream, oatmeal, sage, soft grey, dusty blue, or rust. All photograph beautifully. We want the focus to stay on your connection — not busy patterns or logos.
Some easy ideas:
Mums: A flowy dress, an oversized knit, or a linen button-up
Dads: A plain tee, henley, or soft shirt with jeans or comfy chino’s
Siblings: Something soft, solid, and easy to move in
No need to match — just keep things in the same tone family. And barefoot is always welcome.
5. Keep These Essentials Close By
You don’t need to prep a whole baby bag — just have a few simple things within reach:
Nappies + wipes
Muslin cloth
A dummy (totally optional, but handy)
Extra milk or formula if bottle-feeding
A blanket or swaddle you love
If there’s something special you want included — let me know! I’m all about personal touches.
6. Go With the Flow
Every baby is different. Some snooze through the whole session. Others want to feed every 20 minutes. Some cry a bit, then settle in. It’s all normal.
We’ll take breaks, move slow, and follow your baby’s lead. I’m never in a rush, and nothing is ever a problem.
The moments that feel small — a yawn, a stretch, a glance between you — are often the ones that become your favourites.
7. Let It Be Real
You don’t need to do anything but show up. No need to “perform” or pose or tidy every inch of the house. I’m not here to capture perfect — I’m here to capture you. The way you hold your baby. The way they settle into your arms. The love that fills your space.
That’s more than enough.
Final Thoughts
These early days are a blur — full of heart and honesty and sleepy magic. My job is to help you slow down for a minute and hold onto it. Forever.
If you have any questions, last-minute ideas, or just want to talk through things — I’m always just a message away.
I can't wait to meet your little one and help tell this beautiful part of your story.
